About Arapaho National Forest

Arapaho National Forest

Arapaho National Forest spans over 723,000 acres across north-central Colorado, east of the Continental Divide and near the city of Denver. The forest encompasses high alpine terrain, dense coniferous forests, subalpine meadows, and over 330 miles of hiking and biking trails. Key geographic highlights include parts of the Indian Peaks Wilderness to the west and the Never Summer Mountains to the north. Dominated by Rocky Mountain ecosystems, the forest supports wildlife such as elk, moose, black bears, mountain lions, and a variety of bird species. Historically, the area was inhabited by Ute tribes before European-American settlers arrived in the late 19th century. Today, historic mining remnants and old logging routes offer cultural context. Recreational opportunities are diverse, including backpacking, mountain biking, fishing in alpine lakes and rivers, horseback riding, and winter activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Notable landmarks include the scenic Brainard Lake Recreation Area and the challenging trails of the James Peak Wilderness. Visitor appeal lies in the forest’s close proximity to Denver combined with its quiet, rugged wilderness experience and accessible camping facilities. The area’s blend of easily accessible trails alongside more remote wilderness terrain makes it attractive to both casual day visitors and serious outdoor enthusiasts.
